DISPATCHER / DRIVER MANAGER

Job Purpose

To work as a team member with co-workers, drivers, contractors, customers and management to coordinate and direct the movement of trucks and freight in an efficient and timely manner using a live, computerized dispatch system.

Duties

    • Recording and allocating all requests for delivery within established territory.
    • Preparing pick-up and delivery schedules.
    • Rerecording/tracking all information and paperwork needed for proper billing.
    • Assigning loads to trucks.
    • Maintaining radio and phone contact with drivers.
    • Maintaining a mutually respectful and professional working relationship with the drivers assigned.
    • Coaching drivers on communication, on-time delivery, paperwork completion and any other issues necessary to complete the dispatch process.
    • Ensuring drivers are in compliance with DOT requirements and regulations, i.e. hours of service, inspections, etc.
    • Ensuring drivers are not dispatched when they are not in compliance with DOT or Company Safety rules and regulations.
    • Seek inbound/outbound reload opportunities.
    • Data entry of accurate dispatch information.
    • Preplan truck movement prior to it being empty.
    • Keep equipment inventory with accurate records of trailers.

Qualifications

Education / Training:

  • High school diploma.

Experience:

  • 3 - 5 years of experience in freight operations with similar duties.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

    • Ability to work well under pressure and at a fast pace.
    • Ability to establish a working relationship with independent contractors (drivers) that is mutually respectful and beneficial to the company and the contractor.
    • Knowledge of geographical area to facilitate efficient routing.
    • Ability to receive calls and solve problems before and after regular work schedule.
    • Good computer skills.
    • Good time management skills.
    • Excellent communication skills.
    • Excellent organizational skills.

Physical Demands:

    • Office environment.
    • Sitting for long periods.
    • Data entry.
    • Taking before and after hours calls.

Department: Operations

Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, on call after hours.
